TG:Where are you from?
SK:I was born in Rajasthan, in the North West of India and was educated in a boarding school in Pilani – one of the best schools at the time.I wanted to become a professional field hockey player. I was the team captain and I played for the state of Rajasthan but I gave up when I started working in the hospitality business.
TG: When and why did you come to Paris?
SK: came to Paris in 1994 to get married.
I worked for several years in Mandawa, my hometown, at the Maharajah’s palace turned into a deluxe hotel – a member of the heritage hotels of India. In 1992 a French girl -who was to become my wife- came to the hotel as a tourist. We wrote to each other for two years and she came back
to India twice while I was learning French with the hope of visiting her some day there. In the spring of 1994 I came to Paris and fell in love with the city. In September we got married and I was to become more and more Parisian as the years went by. My wife has spent her whole life in the Latin Quarter and we both love living there.
TG: Describe a typical day in the life of a concierge?
SK:When I start my day, I always check my emails first. I make the all the reservation files for the coming guests. I arrange transportation for the guests who leave the hotel and I deal with the various requests of our guests during the day.
TG: What are the qualities that make a great concierge?
SK: In my opinion a great concierge should be very attentive to all the needs of the guests and fulfill them as soon as possible. A good concierge should take a personal interest in each guest and make him feel at home. Every guest has to feel he’s unique and not just a room number. A good concierge should always be ready and never surprised.
TG: What was your most unusual guest request?
SK: A guest wanted to propose his girlfriend on the Pont Neuf and asked me to book a private boat for 150 people for a cocktail and dinner. The whole decoration had to be pink, with roses everywhere. I had only three days to arrange it and I DID IT. They were very pleased with my service and so was I.
TG: Without being indiscreet who are some of your most famous guests?
SK: Michael Johnson and Vanessa Paradis
TG:Not interested in negative gossip but if they were exceptionally nice say so
SK: Indeed, they were very friendly and easy-going.
