M and I were picking out a desk for my office at my favorite depot-vente (117) on the rue Alesia, a street packed with discount outlets for shoes, clothing and furniture. She spotted a pair of Chinese chairs that she had to have and while we waited for Joseph to come back from a delivery and load up we took off in search of lunch.

Our route took us past Au Moulin Vert  and even before I knew its history (George Sand and Victor Hugo often ate here) I knew that it would be perfect. We were ushered to a corner table on the light-filled veranda.

From the extensive luncheon formule (entrée, plat or plat dessert) at 18.50 euros M selected Assiette de poissons marinés aux aromates while I chose Caviar d’aubergines au saumon fumé-my only complaint-not enough garlic.

A perfectly acceptable Muscadet was poured at 2.90 euros the glass.

We both continued the provençal experience with Sardines grillées au citron with pommes vapeur.

A lovely meal with friendly professional service and as we were leaving I observed the shirt-sleeved maitre d’ cutting meat for an elderly lady-an act of kindness that left me hungry to come back.
